Sales tax

Sales tax for cottage bakers, and where to find your rate.

Turn on sales tax in BakeryFlow and enter your rate. We apply it to orders. You still collect, file, and remit with your tax authority. Use the official links below for every US state and Canadian province or territory.

How BakeryFlow handles sales tax

In bakery settings, turn tax on and set your rate. BakeryFlow adds that rate to customer orders. We do not choose the rate for you, and we do not file or remit on your behalf.

How to enter your rate

  • US: enter your state rate. If you also owe local city or county tax, add those rates into the number you enter.
  • Canada with GST + PST (British Columbia, Saskatchewan), GST + RST (Manitoba), or GST + QST (Quebec): add both rates and enter the total.
  • Canada with HST: enter the HST rate. GST-only provinces and territories: enter GST alone.

Cottage food exemptions

Some states and provinces treat small home-kitchen sales differently for sales tax, separate from cottage food production rules. This page is not legal or tax advice. Check the official link for your state or province below, or read our cottage food laws guides for what you can bake and sell.

Frequently asked questions

Does BakeryFlow look up my sales tax rate for me?⌄

No. You set your sales tax rate in BakeryFlow. We do not look up rates by address, and we do not file or remit tax for you.

How do I enter GST + PST or GST + QST?⌄

Add the rates together and enter that total in BakeryFlow. For example, 5% GST + 7% PST means you enter 12%.

Does cottage food exempt me from sales tax?⌄

Not automatically. Cottage food rules cover what you can bake and sell from home. Sales tax is separate. Check your state or province’s official page. This guide is not legal or tax advice.
