Canadian Thanksgiving

Canadian Thanksgiving bakery preorders for October 12, 2026.

Canadian Thanksgiving is the second Monday in October, not the late-November holiday in the United States. In 2026 that Monday is October 12. A November pie plan opens too late here, and it collides with Halloween two weeks later. Use the dates below to choose a short menu, close orders with time to shop, and run pickup across the long weekend.

Why this weekend is tighter than it looks

Thanksgiving Monday is October 12. Halloween is October 31. If you sell both, they cannot share the same oven days. Finish Thanksgiving pickup before you open a Halloween menu, or keep the Halloween quantities small. Christmas cookie boxes can wait until this weekend is packed and picked up. Bakers who sell in both countries should not reuse a US November pie menu for this October weekend.

A date-by-date plan for 2026

These are working dates for a home kitchen, not a law. Move the close date earlier if your oven is small.

  • Sept 14-18: choose 3 to 5 items, price them from ingredient plus packaging cost, and order pie tins, boxes, and labels.
  • Sept 21: open preorders. Share one link. Stop taking pie orders in DMs and texts.
  • Oct 2 or Oct 5: hard close. You need the following week to shop, mix, and schedule the oven.
  • Oct 8-9: shop and mix fillings that hold, such as pumpkin and apple. Do not leave this to bake morning.
  • Oct 10-11: bake day. Rolls can bake Friday and hold. Pies are better the day before the first pickup window.
  • Oct 10-12: pickup. Do not offer one open-ended Monday slot.

Menu ideas for a Canadian Thanksgiving table

Sell items you have already made for a family table. Add a new recipe only if you have tested the bake time.

  • Pumpkin pie, one size (9-inch), sold whole. Slices at the door slow everyone down.
  • Apple pie in the same size, if both fit in the oven plan.
  • Butter tarts by the dozen. They pack well, and many Canadian customers expect them.
  • Dinner rolls by the dozen. Bake them Friday if Saturday is already full of pies.
  • Pecan pie only if you already make it. Nuts cost more, so set a lower quantity limit than pumpkin.
  • Tourtiere only if meat is allowed under your provincial cottage food rules and you already have a tested recipe.
  • Skip custom cakes and “any flavor you want” this weekend.

Set quantity limits from the oven

Guessing “I’ll see how many people message me” is how you oversell. Do the oven math before you publish the menu, then put that number on each item.

  • Count how many pies fit in the oven at once.
  • Count how many bakes you can finish on bake day, including cooling.
  • Multiply those two numbers, then cut the result by about a quarter so packing and a late problem do not break the day.
  • Publish that number as the quantity limit. When it sells out, it is sold out.
  • Do not add extras in Instagram DMs after the item is gone.

Pickup on the long weekend

Families travel. “Pick up Monday” means everyone arrives at once, and pies sit in cars. Short windows keep the handoff calm.

  • Offer two or three windows, such as Saturday morning, Sunday afternoon, and Monday morning.
  • Have the customer choose a window when they order, so you pack in that order.
  • Label each box with the name and the window.
  • If pickup is a porch or a market table, give the address and how long the box will sit. Food left out for hours is wasted.

How customers in Canada expect to pay

Interac e-Transfer is what many customers will ask for. Cash at pickup is still common. List only the methods you will check before bake day. If an order is not paid by the close date, do not buy ingredients for it. Say that rule on the menu before they order.

Frequently asked questions

When is Canadian Thanksgiving in 2026?⌄

Monday, October 12, 2026. Pickup usually lands on the Saturday, Sunday, or Monday of that long weekend.

When should Canadian Thanksgiving preorders open?⌄

The week of September 21 is a practical open date if you want to close around October 2 or October 5. That still leaves a week to shop and mix before bake day.

Can I copy a US November pie plan?⌄

No. Canadian Thanksgiving is about six weeks earlier. Use the Canadian holiday calendar, and do not open this menu in November.

What if I also sell Halloween treats?⌄

Use a separate menu and separate quantity limits. Do not bake Thanksgiving pies and Halloween trays on the same day unless the oven math already includes both.
